Author and Book Interview – Madhukar Raj’s Hack the Job

What’s your background?
I started my career as an intern at a software firm in Bangalore in the 90s. I then moved to work for a firm in Barbados and a couple of later got transferred to the headquarters in Connecticut, US. All three of these opportunities involved hacks that I have shared in the book.
From intern, I moved up the organizational ladder, again through hacks which I did not realize at the time, all the way up to top. In 2007, we decided to move our family back to India so we could make a difference by sharing what we learnt through our experiences in working in multi-cultural environments.
In 2016, I left my corporate job as COO of the Asia Pacific Division of a US based software firm to start Leopard Hill Global Learning – a corporate and life skills training company. I have delivered keynote talks and conducted programs for leading organizations on transformational leadership, building high performance teams, storytelling for impactful presentations, outbound experiential learning, mindfulness, behavioral interviewing and connecting with customers for hospitality and healthcare in several countries.

How did you become a writer?
I had a passion for reading and writing from my childhood days. We used to steal books from book stores and libraries as kids because we could not afford to even borrow them. I also had a lot of practice writing love letters and poems on greeting cards as a teenager! Writers like Chetan Bhagat, Tony Robbins, Robin Sharma, Brian Tracy, Anik Singal, Ashwin Sanghi, Vinita Dawra Nangia and Anuja Chauhan inspired me to pursue writing.
I began to learn formal writing from 2010 from like Vijay Nair, Sharath Kommaraju and Nitin Soni. My first piece was a collection of short stories revolving around love and marriage. But I held off on publishing it because I wanted to be known as a non-fiction writer who uplifts readers.
In 2012, I started working on a personal development book to help people do and get what they really want in life. After three years of writing and research, I ended up with enough content for 16 books for different dimensions of life such as employment, entrepreneurship, wealth creation, relationships, health & fitness, spirituality, etc.

Why did you write this book?
After I quit my job, I found myself reflecting with great clarity on how my own career as well as that of thousands of people I worked with either rocketed or plummeted.
I suddenly became aware of, and with help from a friend, began to compile our observations of:
• all the reasons why a person was hired or rejected
• how an employee leveraged his Boss relationship or struggled with it
• how employees met or failed at meeting organizational expectations
• why someone got promoted or had it denied
• how some employees walked away with huge hikes while others saw none
• and why some employees were fried, fired or laid off while others survived, strived and sustained.
I shared these insights in a public workshop called “Street Smart Professional” where it was received extremely well. Over the next two years, that content, with inputs from hundreds of professionals and leaders around the world, evolved into the book Hack the Job.

What is this book about?
Employees can only go so far with soft skills which has been over hyped in the recent years. Street smart skills is the need of the hour where landing a job, growing in it, maximizing the rewards and securing it against right sizing requires conscious thought, planning and situational action due to brutal competition.
Organizations have raised the benchmark for hiring, promoting and retaining people. Also, managing perception is now vital in paving one’s way in an environment where there are a multitude of communication channels which are highly visible across the entire organizational hierarchy.
This book shares hundreds of hacks that can be used by anyone from an intern all the way to a CEO – because principles never change. Only their application does.

Why the title “Hack the Job?
Since the book presents and emphasizes street smart skills, the term hack described it perfectly. The hacks are all ethical, though some may fall into one of those shades of grey, when evaluated against the conventional norms. The title, I must confess, is also designed to grab attention.

Who is this book intended for?
Hack the job is intended for:
• Graduating students
• Job seekers
• Employees in non-managerial positions
• New, mid and senior managers
• Management professionals
• CXOs
What is different about this book?
The book is rooted in reality and actual experiences of employees all over the world. The hacks are presented in a simple style augmented by illustrations, examples and stories which make for an easy read. This is not a book of revelation; it is a book of application. The focus is on introspection and practical implementation which is facilitated by a set of questions in “Haction Time” at the end of most chapters.

How is this book structured?
The book comprises of ten parts:
• 12 pillars of a successful career
• Finding the dream job
• Boss relationship
management • Connecting with people at work such as co-workers, management and customers
• Organizational expectations from employees today
• Acing appraisals, maximizing pay raises and bonuses
• Securing one’s job from frying, firing and layoffs
• Overcoming common workplace challenges such as productivity and perception
• Managing stress, handling a mid-career crisis and achieving work-personal life balance
• Strategies for surfing the job automation wave
• Testing the waters of entrepreneurship

How will this book help readers?
All the hacks shared in the book have been validated by employees in the real world. While the results may differ as situations are not always the same, the philosophy behind it is rooted in actual observation or experiences at the workplace. The book also provides a holistic view that is both wide and deep while being light in order to help employees see the big picture behind their employment.

What is your vision for this book?
This is not a book – it is a movement to change the thought process of employees in adapting to the rapid changes that the field of employment has begun experiencing. Employers will continue to cut down a significant portion of their workforce due to automation and innovation. But while millions of jobs will cease to exist, there will be millions of new roles which will open up. Employees will need to prepare to ease into this role rather than hoping for the best or dreading the wave that they know is coming.
My vision is for this book to reach at least a million employees around the world and enable them to grab control over their career rather than just going with the flow and ending up somewhere they do not want to be.
